    People have always been yapping and forgetting about their intent 0.1 seconds later. All ages and groups. It takes something radical and serious inside a person to keep pushing consistently. Because as easy as it is for intelligent people to acquire new skills and information, gamedev will still be a daunting endeavor as you are making up a whole team all by yourself that usually consists of radically different personalities (like being an artist and programmer at the same time).

    I'm making a game right now, been coding, doing art, and music for 20+ years. I have a BS in Computer Science, and can go on, but while no one really listens to me except those following my development, in my opinion, the hardest thing about making games isn't making games so to speak. In fact, the coding is the easiest part, that always has a concrete solution. I think the hardest part is keeping it all in your head, always having a plan, and always knowing exactly what the next step is. It's some serious project management and it's like a lot of dreams in that you have to get comfortable with doing things wrong, cleaning up your mess, and starting over. Then there's all the aspects taken for granted like UI that are massive time sinks and will make or break you. That said, I believe people should go for their dream game. There's no reason to keep flooding the market with shovelware, and better to find out sooner than later if it's for you or not. Furthermore, the main excuse people use to not do so, "so they can get some experience", is complete bs. There's nothing that making a small shovelware game will teach you that you won't learn in the process of making a significant game ten fold. I find it's more of an ego thing that people just wanna say "I've shipped a game". Any way, I digress, and wish you the best! It's a struggle, but I do believe anyone can do it if they really go for it. (Though obviously not everyone will.)

    I think most people are initially interested in game development because: Wow, someone put a world into a computer. And I don't think the youtube tutorial, game engine path, although arguable for a lot of things you want to get done, should be at the core of someone's game development journey/narrative. It should always be curiosity at why that world is inside your computer, how could someone have possibly made it, how is something in there turning logic and display and audio into a world with people and physics and light. That is why it is so hard, because it is connected to everything. It is very beautiful. You shouldn't worry about the "game development tutorials -> "right way" -> game developer" pipeline. You are a person exploring the world. With enough knowledge in the related interesting things (physics, math, art, audio, what is a driver even? Where did computers even come from?) it'll be seen that games are just one of many interesting artifacts people create, for money, for fun, for whatever, stemming from a view of the world which is really grounded in scientific curiosity.

    For me its not about anything technical, I'm just not creative. I can and have helped people make games, all the actual technical work comes easy to me, but I have no creative vision whatsoever nor do I know how to make systems work together in a satisfying way unless the ground work is already done. I had one good idea once, and midway through me developing it (and posting about my idea online) Watch Dogs came out, and they had a minigame in that game that was bar for bar exactly what I was planning to make, so I saw no reason to continue.

    "nobody does it" buddy, please. get involved in your local game dev scene. get involved in the various online communities of game devs. you'll meet hundreds of people making games and selling them and "doing it" and putting not only time into their own work but helping others. all your points about it being a lot to learn to get going can be valid, but you also found out you can start simple and work your way up, learning and creating the whole time. you already knew python, start with a simple python game engine. etc. let's not deep throat the UA-cam algorithm with this clickbait hyperbole like "nobody become a video game developer" and consider "why so few people become video game developers but everyone wants to" which is totally valid.

    Great video, I agree and also with many comments. But I think that an important fact as a solo game developer is to be sincere about your game scope: many many people start with a over the scope game: "I want to make an 3D open world with fishing, farming, combat, this and that..." ...dude, just plan your game in a timeline and perhaps an open world as a solo dev with limited time is not the best way to start... I just want to state that it is very important to plan a game before start a crazy idea. It is good to try and fail and learn from mistakes but you dont want to "waste" years in an seemingless infinite project while if you just reconsider some things (reduce the scope of the game, only necessary mechanics, only this size...) it all could move to a realizable project in not to many time. Planning and be sincere about yourself could led you to fulfill your dreams in a more sizeable way.

    Hi there! From an indie dev standpoint, I see metasounds a bit intimidating and more oriented to sound professionals - yet the low price point seems to target a broader audience, so it kind of confuses me. I got the feeling I may be missing its advantages in a game development scenario. I watched several videos about metasounds yet the one which seems to bring something unique to my workflow is in this video: ua-cam.com/video/92RIT7tObDg/v-deo.html That is: velocity based realtime mixing for foley/impacts. Which is nice but feels like using a huge hammer on a tiny nail. Coming from a fasttracker2/keygen music era, this has some extra appeal on me, yet I'm...a bit perplexed on how a mid-sized indie team, or a solo dev, could benefit from the plugin. I believe demo maps/game environments would probably explain it better? Maybe if it had some way to plug into Mod/XM/midi it could be a nice bridge to make the sound experience of a game more dynamic? Again, maybe I'm missing the point - I see the potential but seeing it in practice would probably convince me more it's something I could integrate more in the game. Also: is it fully multiplatform? I see it as a way to deliver more organic soundscapes (I'm thinking of machineries with complex patterns or moving parts), yet I wonder how it integrates with existing audio plugins handling occlusion and spatialization.

    • @NeatWolf
      @NeatWolf 6 місяців тому

      EDIT: I believe this video kind of suggests more practical uses of Metasounds for the average dev: ua-cam.com/video/3230-FwCts0/v-deo.html

    A common mistake I see a lot of people making starting out is that they want to make their 'dream game' right away. It's near impossible to make your 'dream game' in the first try imo. Game dev, like many other art forms, is something that takes a lot of practice. My recommendation: USE ASSETS THAT ARE ALREADY AVAILABLE TO YOU. For example, if you want to learn how to be a game programmer, use free art assets or art from the asset store. If you want to learn how to make game art, try finding scripts that handle the programming part. So many people get sidetracked by trying to make the art, music, animation etc in their game. You can, but it's a lot and many people quit because it feels overwhelming.
